The Senate Judiciary Committee plays a pivotal role in the selection of federal judges at both the appellate and Supreme Court levels. As the first "stop" in the approval process, the Committee examines each nominee's record and fitness for the court, and votes on whether to approve the nomination.

If the nomination is approved, it is sent to the full Senate for confirmation. If the nomination is defeated in Committee, a vote may still take place on whether or not to send the nomination to the full Senate with "no recommendation" or with a "negative recommendation."

For Supreme Court nominees, the Senate has agreed that all nominees will be voted on by the full Senate regardless of how the Judiciary Committee votes.

The members of the Senate Judiciary Committee need to hear from their constituents about judicial nominations. Call your Senator and urge him or her to vote for nominees that support fundamental freedoms, including the right to reproductive choice.
